Hyundai Elantra Torque Converter
Torque Converter to suit the Hyundai Elantra, cross-referenced against OEM specification and dispatched countrywide

What Are Hyundai Elantra Torque Converter?
The torque converter is the fluid coupling in your Hyundai automatic gearbox that transfers engine torque to the transmission and multiplies torque at low speeds. On the four-speed and six-speed automatics fitted to the i20, Accent and Creta, we see shudder between 55 and 80km/h as the first warning of friction wear.
Signs You Need New Torque Converter
Before you order torque converter for a Elantra
Sold here across J2 Avante, XD, HD, MD and AD, the Elantra is not one car for parts purposes — it is several.Early SA cars wear the Avante name and later ones the Elantra badge for what is effectively the same lineage — the generation code, not the badge, is what a parts desk works from.
Engine families fitted to the SA-market Elantra:
Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations.
Send us manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to with your enquiry and we will confirm the correct torque converter against your car before anything is dispatched.
In South Africa the Elantra is mostly a compact sedan bought by long-distance commuters, so highway mileage accumulates fast and driveline wear tends to run ahead of the visual condition. That is the wear pattern we stock and source against.
Hyundai Elantra Torque Converter — Questions We Get Asked
Will torque converter from another Elantra fit mine?
Not automatically. The Elantra sold in South Africa as J2 Avante, XD, HD, MD and AD, and early SA cars wear the Avante name and later ones the Elantra badge for what is effectively the same lineage — the generation code, not the badge, is what a parts desk works from. Send us the generation code off your VIN plate and we will confirm it either way before anything is dispatched.
Which engines did the South African Elantra come with?
SA-market cars ran Alpha 1.6 (XD), Gamma 1.6 (HD), Nu 1.8 (MD), Nu 2.0 (AD). The code stamped on the block is what we work from — the badge on the boot is not reliable on its own.
Is the torque converter part of the gearbox?
It sits between the two — bolted to the flywheel at one end and slotting into the front of the transmission at the other. We treat it as a gearbox item because you cannot reach it without pulling the box, which is also why the labour rather than the part drives the bill. When ordering, ask about both halves.
What does a failing torque converter feel like?
A shudder at 55 to 80km/h under light throttle is the signature — it feels like driving over rumble strips that are not there. Add slipping under acceleration, harsh shifts and a whine that rises with engine revs. The shudder is the lock-up clutch friction wearing, and caught early it does not always mean a replacement.
What is converter shudder, exactly?
The lock-up clutch inside the converter juddering instead of engaging cleanly. Catch it early and an ATF drain and fill with the correct spec fluid can restore smooth engagement. Leave it and the friction material wears through, at which point no amount of fluid brings it back.
Will a fluid flush fix it?
Sometimes, early on. Fresh correct-spec fluid gives the friction material something to grip and can quieten the shudder. Be clear with yourself that it is a patch rather than a cure — once the friction is gone it is gone. Get it scanned first so you know which of the two situations you are in.
What does a converter cost to replace on a Hyundai?
It is a gearbox-out job, so labour dominates. SA specialists rebuild four-speed automatic converters at a fraction of new. Request a free quote through our form with the number of gears and the engine it is bolted to, and we will compare new, rebuilt and good used options.
