Can a stretched Hyundai timing chain cause engine damage?
Yes — a badly stretched chain eventually jumps teeth, the valves hit the pistons and you're looking at bent valves or a complete engine rebuild. At the first persistent cold-start rattle, stop driving and book it in. Cheaper to fix early than rebuild.
How often should a Hyundai timing chain be replaced?
Manufacturer says 'lifetime of the engine' but real-world 1.6 T-GDi and 1.5 CRDi engines see chain stretch from as early as 50,000 to 80,000km. We recommend inspection at 80,000km regardless and immediate action on any cold-start rattle, whatever the mileage.
What oil should I use to prevent timing chain stretch?
Hyundai/API SN 5W-30 full synthetic is the specified grade for 1.6 T-GDi engines and matters more than any other service item. Use exactly that spec, change every 10,000km maximum, never stretch the interval. Wrong oil is the single biggest cause of early chain failure.
