Transmission Pump for Hyundai i20

What Are Hyundai i20 Transmission Pump?

The transmission pump is what puts pressure into an automatic gearbox in the first place — without it the valve body, the clutch packs and the torque converter all have nothing to work with. It is a gearbox-out job, which is why the labour dominates the bill and why it is worth having the converter and valve body assessed at the same time rather than going back in six months. On Hyundai the four-speed automatics the pump is a known weak point — a whining noise and shifting hesitation are the classic symptoms, often fixed at specialist rebuilders before the full pump fails.

Signs You Need New Transmission Pump

Whining noise that rises with engine speed
Shifting delay or flare when selecting D or R
Transmission fluid puddle under the car
Burnt transmission fluid smell
Red or brown fluid colour on the dipstick
Check engine light with pressure-related code

Getting the right transmission pump for your i20 first time

Does one transmission pump listing cover every i20?

No. On the i20, PB, then GB, then the current BC3 are all in circulation locally, and they do not share one parts list. The PB and GB are different cars underneath despite the shared badge, so a part listed simply as "i20" is not automatically the right one — the generation code decides it.

Which engine is in my i20?

SA-market cars were sold with Kappa 1.2, Gamma 1.4 and Kappa 1.0 T-GDi (N Line). The code stamped on the block settles it — the badge on the boot does not.

What do you need from me to quote transmission pump?

Manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to. Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations.

In South Africa the i20 is mostly a high-mileage commuter hatch that spends its life in stop-start city traffic, which is why wear items move faster on an i20 than on almost anything else Hyundai sells here. That is the wear pattern we stock and source against.

Before You Order i20 Transmission Pump

Will transmission pump from another i20 fit mine?

Not automatically. The i20 sold in South Africa as PB, then GB, then the current BC3, and the PB and GB are different cars underneath despite the shared badge, so a part listed simply as "i20" is not automatically the right one — the generation code decides it. Send us the generation code off your VIN plate and we will confirm it either way before anything is dispatched.

How do you check transmission pump actually fits a i20?

We work backwards from the VIN: generation first, then engine family, then whether the car is pre- or post-facelift within that generation. On the i20 specifically, the PB and GB are different cars underneath despite the shared badge, so a part listed simply as "i20" is not automatically the right one — the generation code decides it.

What does a failing transmission pump sound like?

A whine that rises with engine speed, hesitation when you select Drive or Reverse, and harsh engagement once it does go in. Look underneath for red or brown ATF and check for a burnt smell on the dipstick. Catch it early — a pump that fails properly usually takes the converter with it.

What does a transmission pump cost to replace?

The part is the small half of this. Maktrans SA lists a four-speed automatic oil pump around $105 as a part, but the gearbox has to come out, so labour is the majority of the bill. Request a free quote with the number of gears and the engine, and we will give you a realistic SA installed figure.

There is fluid leaking under my Hyundai. Is it the gearbox?

Check the colour before anything else — ATF is red, engine oil is brown to black, coolant is green or pink. If it is red, the usual sources are the pump seal, the pan gasket, the cooler lines or the converter seal. Any ATF leak wants attention immediately: running the box low is what destroys pumps, converters and clutches, in that order.

What colour should Hyundai gearbox fluid be?

Fresh ATF is red and healthy fluid stays pinkish-red. Brown means old or overheated; dark brown to black with a scorched smell means the clutches have been cooking. Brown or black on the dipstick is a full drain, filter and refill as an absolute minimum, and often the start of a rebuild conversation.

Can I keep driving with a leaking pump?

To a workshop, yes. As a way of life, no. The box runs on the pressure the pump makes, and a leak drops the level until the pump runs dry and the clutches burn. We regularly see owners turn a rebuildable gearbox into a replaceable one by putting this off for a month.

Let us confirm the transmission pump before you buy

Photos of the old part and your VIN are usually all we need. We confirm the transmission pump against your i20 before quoting, not after.
