What Are Hyundai i30 Torque Converter?
The torque converter is the fluid coupling in your Hyundai automatic gearbox that transfers engine torque to the transmission and multiplies torque at low speeds. On the four-speed and six-speed automatics fitted to the i20, Accent and Creta, we see shudder between 55 and 80km/h as the first warning of friction wear.

How we match torque converter to your i30
What changes across the range
Ordering torque converter for a i30 starts with the generation: FD, GD and PD.
N Line and standard derivatives differ in brakes, suspension and bumper mouldings — the badge on the boot changes the parts list, not just the trim.
Worth knowing: the i30developed alongside the Kia Cee’d, with which it shares a great deal.
What we check on torque converter
- •The generation code, because i30 parts lists split on it
- •The engine family — this i30 was sold with Beta II 2.0 (FD), Nu 1.8 (GD), 1.4 T-GDi (PD N Line) and U-line 1.6 CRDi on selected derivatives
- •Manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to
- •Whether the car is pre- or post-facelift within its generation
In South Africa the i30 is mostly bought by drivers who wanted a more solid-feeling hatch, and now aging into the independent aftermarket where the Kia cross-reference becomes genuinely useful. That is the wear pattern we stock and source against.
i30 Torque Converter: Common Questions
Will torque converter from another i30 fit mine?
Not automatically. The i30 sold in South Africa as FD, GD and PD, and N Line and standard derivatives differ in brakes, suspension and bumper mouldings — the badge on the boot changes the parts list, not just the trim. Send us the generation code off your VIN plate and we will confirm it either way before anything is dispatched.
Can you source torque converter for the i30 if local stock is dry?
Usually, yes. The i30 developed alongside the Kia Cee’d, with which it shares a great deal, which gives us a second catalogue to search when Hyundai-listed stock runs out. We will tell you what we are quoting rather than leaving you to guess.
Is the torque converter part of the gearbox?
It sits between the two — bolted to the flywheel at one end and slotting into the front of the transmission at the other. We treat it as a gearbox item because you cannot reach it without pulling the box, which is also why the labour rather than the part drives the bill. When ordering, ask about both halves.
What does a failing torque converter feel like?
A shudder at 55 to 80km/h under light throttle is the signature — it feels like driving over rumble strips that are not there. Add slipping under acceleration, harsh shifts and a whine that rises with engine revs. The shudder is the lock-up clutch friction wearing, and caught early it does not always mean a replacement.
What is converter shudder, exactly?
The lock-up clutch inside the converter juddering instead of engaging cleanly. Catch it early and an ATF drain and fill with the correct spec fluid can restore smooth engagement. Leave it and the friction material wears through, at which point no amount of fluid brings it back.
Will a fluid flush fix it?
Sometimes, early on. Fresh correct-spec fluid gives the friction material something to grip and can quieten the shudder. Be clear with yourself that it is a patch rather than a cure — once the friction is gone it is gone. Get it scanned first so you know which of the two situations you are in.
What does a converter cost to replace on a Hyundai?
It is a gearbox-out job, so labour dominates. SA specialists rebuild four-speed automatic converters at a fraction of new. Request a free quote through our form with the number of gears and the engine it is bolted to, and we will compare new, rebuilt and good used options.
