The ix35 sold in South Africa as LM, and because the ix35 and the LM Tucson are one vehicle under two names, parts listed for either will usually interchange — worth knowing when one listing is dry and the other is not. Probably not. The i10, i20, Getz, Accent, Elantra, Creta and the front-drive Tucson derivatives all carry the final drive inside the gearbox casing, so what feels like a diff fault is a gearbox job. A standalone diff you can unbolt exists only on the H100, H1, Mighty, Terracan and the all-wheel-drive Santa Fe and Tucson derivatives.

Because most of the range runs an integrated diff, replacement usually means a gearbox swap rather than a diff swap. Possibly. The tell is what the noise tracks: a worn final drive whines in step with road speed, while a noise that follows engine revs is something else entirely. Worn pinion or crown-wheel bearings hum at low revs; a low gearbox oil level or a worn input-shaft bearing produce something similar. Check the fluid level first — it is a two-minute job and it is free.

On the integrated units, a proper rebuild with new bearings, crown wheel, pinion and seals often lands at the cost of a good used gearbox, and the used box usually wins on labour hours. On the standalone rear diffs from the rear-drive and 4x4 models, a rebuild makes far more sense.

Hyundai calls the manual gearbox fluid lifetime, but in practice we recommend a change every 60,000 to 80,000 km, and more readily on cars living with SA dust and heat. Fresh gear oil is cheap next to crown-wheel and bearing wear. Raise it at the next service rather than waiting for a noise.
