The outer, usually. It screws onto the inner and connects to the wheel knuckle, and it is exposed, so its ball joint boot splits and the grease escapes. How do I check a tie rod end on a Hyundai?
Grab the tyre at 9 and 3 o'clock and rock it firmly. Play with a knock means an outer tie rod, an inner CV joint or a lower ball joint — the test narrows it to three, and a hoist inspection settles which. Supporting symptoms are a clunk on turns, feathered front tyre wear and a squeak at parking speeds.
