The older hydraulically assisted Hyundais — the Getz, the earlier Accent and Atos, the Terracan — use a different arrangement to the newer electrically assisted cars where the motor sits on the column or the rack. Outer ends nearly always go first, and they announce themselves: the boot splits, the grease escapes, and the joint knocks on lock. Once the boot is open the clock is running, whatever the mileage says.

The outer, usually. It screws onto the inner and connects to the wheel knuckle, and it is exposed, so its ball joint boot splits and the grease escapes. Inners thread into the rack under the rubber gaiter and generally only fail once that gaiter has torn and let dirt in. Two different parts and two different jobs.
How do I check a tie rod end on a Hyundai?
Grab the tyre at 9 and 3 o'clock and rock it firmly. Play with a knock means an outer tie rod, an inner CV joint or a lower ball joint — the test narrows it to three, and a hoist inspection settles which. Supporting symptoms are a clunk on turns, feathered front tyre wear and a squeak at parking speeds.

Is a worn tie rod safe to drive on?

Does the car need aligning afterwards?
Always. The tie rod sets the toe angle, so disturbing it means a four-wheel alignment to reset. Skip it and the new tyres are scrubbed out within weeks and the car pulls constantly. Build the alignment into the quote from the start rather than treating it as optional.
