Hyundai Tiburon Torque Converter
Whether your Tiburon is an early or late build, we match the torque converter to your derivative rather than to the badge

What Are Hyundai Tiburon Torque Converter?
The torque converter is the fluid coupling in your Hyundai automatic gearbox that transfers engine torque to the transmission and multiplies torque at low speeds. On the four-speed and six-speed automatics fitted to the i20, Accent and Creta, we see shudder between 55 and 80km/h as the first warning of friction wear.
Signs You Need New Torque Converter
Before you order torque converter for a Tiburon
Does one torque converter listing cover every Tiburon?
No. Ordering torque converter for a Tiburon starts with the generation: the SA-market coupe in 2.0 and 2.7 V6 form. The coupe body panels, glass and lighting are Tiburon-only, even where the engine and gearbox parts interchange with the Elantra of the same period.
Which engine is in my Tiburon?
SA-market cars were sold with Beta II 2.0 and Delta 2.7 V6. The code stamped on the block settles it — the badge on the boot does not.
What do you need from me to quote torque converter?
Manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to. Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations.
In South Africa the Tiburon is mostly an enthusiast car with an active owner community, where the split between shared mechanical parts and unique body parts defines what is easy to find. That is the wear pattern we stock and source against.
Before You Order Tiburon Torque Converter
Will torque converter from another Tiburon fit mine?
Not automatically. The Tiburon sold in South Africa as the SA-market coupe in 2.0 and 2.7 V6 form, and the coupe body panels, glass and lighting are Tiburon-only, even where the engine and gearbox parts interchange with the Elantra of the same period. Send us the generation code off your VIN plate and we will confirm it either way before anything is dispatched.
How do you check torque converter actually fits a Tiburon?
We work backwards from the VIN: generation first, then engine family, then whether the car is pre- or post-facelift within that generation. On the Tiburon specifically, the coupe body panels, glass and lighting are Tiburon-only, even where the engine and gearbox parts interchange with the Elantra of the same period.
Is the torque converter part of the gearbox?
It sits between the two — bolted to the flywheel at one end and slotting into the front of the transmission at the other. We treat it as a gearbox item because you cannot reach it without pulling the box, which is also why the labour rather than the part drives the bill. When ordering, ask about both halves.
What does a failing torque converter feel like?
A shudder at 55 to 80km/h under light throttle is the signature — it feels like driving over rumble strips that are not there. Add slipping under acceleration, harsh shifts and a whine that rises with engine revs. The shudder is the lock-up clutch friction wearing, and caught early it does not always mean a replacement.
What is converter shudder, exactly?
The lock-up clutch inside the converter juddering instead of engaging cleanly. Catch it early and an ATF drain and fill with the correct spec fluid can restore smooth engagement. Leave it and the friction material wears through, at which point no amount of fluid brings it back.
Will a fluid flush fix it?
Sometimes, early on. Fresh correct-spec fluid gives the friction material something to grip and can quieten the shudder. Be clear with yourself that it is a patch rather than a cure — once the friction is gone it is gone. Get it scanned first so you know which of the two situations you are in.
What does a converter cost to replace on a Hyundai?
It is a gearbox-out job, so labour dominates. SA specialists rebuild four-speed automatic converters at a fraction of new. Request a free quote through our form with the number of gears and the engine it is bolted to, and we will compare new, rebuilt and good used options.
