Differential Assembly for Hyundai Veloster

What Are Hyundai Veloster Differential Assembly?

The differential lets the two driven wheels turn at different speeds through a corner while still both receiving drive. On most of the Hyundai range sold here it is not a separate unit at all — the i10, i20, Getz, Accent, Elantra, Creta and the front-drive Tucson derivatives all carry the final drive inside the gearbox casing, so a "diff" job on those cars is a gearbox job. A standalone differential you can unbolt only exists on the rear-drive and all-wheel-drive Hyundais: the H100, H1, Mighty, Terracan and the AWD Santa Fe and Tucson derivatives. A worn final drive announces itself as a whine that rises and falls with road speed rather than with engine revs — which is how we tell it apart from a tired wheel bearing.

Signs You Need New Differential Assembly

Whine that rises and falls with road speed
Clunk on gear take-up or on throttle lift-off
Metallic grinding under hard cornering
Burnt-gear-oil smell from under the car
Vibration through the floorpan at motorway speeds
Gear oil leaking from the diff output seals

Getting the right differential assembly for your Veloster first time

Veloster owners are usually surprised by how much turns on the generation code — FS, then JS all sold here. The asymmetric three-door layout means the left and right sides are genuinely not mirror images — door, glass and trim parts must be ordered by side.

Engine families fitted to the SA-market Veloster:

Gamma 1.6 GDiGamma 1.6 T-GDi

Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations.

Send us manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to with your enquiry and we will confirm the correct differential assembly against your car before anything is dispatched.

In South Africa the Veloster is mostly a low-volume enthusiast car locally, so mechanical parts come easily through the shared Gamma engine family while body and trim need specialist sourcing. That is the wear pattern we stock and source against.

Hyundai Veloster Differential Assembly — Questions We Get Asked

Will differential assembly from another Veloster fit mine?

Not automatically. The Veloster sold in South Africa as FS, then JS, and the asymmetric three-door layout means the left and right sides are genuinely not mirror images — door, glass and trim parts must be ordered by side. Send us the generation code off your VIN plate and we will confirm it either way before anything is dispatched.

Which engines did the South African Veloster come with?

SA-market cars ran Gamma 1.6 GDi, Gamma 1.6 T-GDi. The code stamped on the block is what we work from — the badge on the boot is not reliable on its own.

Does my Hyundai have a separate differential at all?

Probably not. The i10, i20, Getz, Accent, Elantra, Creta and the front-drive Tucson derivatives all carry the final drive inside the gearbox casing, so what feels like a diff fault is a gearbox job. A standalone diff you can unbolt exists only on the H100, H1, Mighty, Terracan and the all-wheel-drive Santa Fe and Tucson derivatives.

What does a Hyundai differential replacement cost?

Because most of the range runs an integrated diff, replacement usually means a gearbox swap rather than a diff swap. SA used gearboxes range from budget to premium depending on mileage, all available through our supplier network. Send your VIN for a quote and tell us whether the car is manual or automatic.

My Hyundai whines — is that the diff?

Possibly. The tell is what the noise tracks: a worn final drive whines in step with road speed, while a noise that follows engine revs is something else entirely. Worn pinion or crown-wheel bearings hum at low revs; a low gearbox oil level or a worn input-shaft bearing produce something similar. Check the fluid level first — it is a two-minute job and it is free.

Rebuild or replace?

On the integrated units, a proper rebuild with new bearings, crown wheel, pinion and seals often lands at the cost of a good used gearbox, and the used box usually wins on labour hours. On the standalone rear diffs from the rear-drive and 4x4 models, a rebuild makes far more sense.

How often should the gearbox oil be changed?

Hyundai calls the manual gearbox fluid lifetime, but in practice we recommend a change every 60,000 to 80,000 km, and more readily on cars living with SA dust and heat. Fresh gear oil is cheap next to crown-wheel and bearing wear. Raise it at the next service rather than waiting for a noise.

Not sure which differential assembly fits your Veloster?
