Flywheel for Hyundai — a straight answer

The decision most Hyundai owners are really making here is whether to rebuild, replace with a used unit, or fit a reconditioned assembly.

Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations.

That is why we quote flywheel against the car rather than against the model name. Send us manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to, and we will come back with what fits , what it costs and how quickly we can get it to you.

What Are Flywheel?

The flywheel stores rotational inertia from your Hyundai's engine and gives the clutch a surface to grip. Modern 1.6 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi diesels run dual-mass flywheels (DMFs) to smooth out the heavy diesel pulses — brilliant for refinement, painful for your wallet when they fail around 150,000 km.

Signs You Need New Flywheel

Rattle or judder from the bellhousing at idle, fades when clutch pressed
Vibration felt through the gear lever in neutral
Clutch judder on take-up, especially from cold
Metallic clanking on engine start or shutdown
Grinding or rumbling noise from the gearbox area
Excessive clutch pedal vibration under load

Hyundai Flywheel — Questions We Get Asked

What decides which flywheel fits my Hyundai?

Manual and automatic derivatives of the same Hyundai take entirely different mountings, driveshafts and coolers, and the automatic itself changed within some generations. In practice the decision in front of you is whether to rebuild, replace with a used unit, or fit a reconditioned assembly.

What do you need from me to quote flywheel?

Manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to. With that we can usually confirm the right part the same day, and we will tell you whether we are quoting new, aftermarket or good used stock rather than leaving you to guess.

How much does a Hyundai dual mass flywheel cost in South Africa?

Real SA pricing — a Hyundai 2.0 CRDi DMF runs around R11,600, with SACHS and OEM-spec units stocked across our supplier network. Labour is substantial because the gearbox must drop. Send your VIN for a quote.

What are the symptoms of a failing dual mass flywheel?

Rattle from the bellhousing at idle that fades when you press the clutch, judder on take-up, vibration through the gear lever and metallic clank on shutdown. 1.6 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi engines in i20, Accent, Sonata and Creta are the usual suspects.

How much does it cost to replace a Hyundai flywheel?

Parts — around R11,600 for a 2.0 CRDi DMF. Add a matched clutch kit, a new thrust bearing and a new rear-main oil seal while the gearbox is out. Labour runs six to eight hours. It's a big job; always bundle clutch replacement with the flywheel.

Can a Hyundai dual mass flywheel be repaired?

No — DMFs are sealed units. The internal springs and dampers cannot be serviced. Solid-mass conversion kits are an aftermarket option on some CRDi models but add vibration. We usually recommend OEM-spec DMF replacement.

Should I replace my flywheel when changing the clutch?

If it's a DMF and over 150,000 km — yes, replace together. The labour is identical and a tired DMF will destroy a fresh clutch within months. For solid flywheels on older Getz or Accent petrols, just skim and reuse if the surface is clean.

Struggling to find the correct flywheel?

Manual or automatic, the number of gears, and the engine it is bolted to is all we need. Our Hyundai desk cross-references it against stock and comes back with what fits.
